About Ukyo E ?The Ukyoe is a style of painting which flourished in Japan between 1700 and 1900. Very appreciated by all classes of the society during the Edo period, nowadays Tokyo, the distincts signs of its design are now considered as japanese pattern. Originally “ukyoe” means “painting of a floating world” and had different subjects of predilection related to japanese culture and tradition. Contrary to most european painters, artists from ukyo were famous in Edo during their lifetime and they had to produce sometimes work for the shogun or for special events. They gain worldwide posterity later when Manet, Monet, and different impressionist artists found inspiration in their art. Nature, fauna, flora, and one of its most telling symbols in the archipelago, the Mount Fuji, which has been continually reproduced, notably by two of the greatest masters of this art, Hokusai, to whom one owes the great wave of Kanagawa, and Hiroshige. |
About the 36 views of Mount Fuji ?Katsushika Hokusai [葛飾 北斎] Born in Edo, now Tokyo, in October 31, 1760 and died in May 10, 1849 was a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. (now Tokyo), Hokusai is best known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景 Fugaku Sanjūroku-kei, c. 1831) The serie of the thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景) was produced from 1830 to 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies and at the height of his career, and published by Nishimura Yohachi. It’s a serie of landscape prints depicting Mount Fuji from different locations and in various seasons and weather conditions. Despite its name, it actually consists of 46 prints, with 10 of them being added after the initial publication. Among the prints are three of Hokusai’s most famous: The Great Wave off Kanagawa (or The Great Wave); Fine Wind, Clear Morning; and Rainstorm Beneath the Summit.
