Did you know?
Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist born in 1760 in Edo (now Tokyo) during Horeki era and probably dead in the same city in 1849, either during year II of Kaei era. He was known primarily as a painter, specialist designer of ukiyo-e (artistic Japanese movement best known for art prints on wood) but also as writer and author of Japanese popular writings.
The great wave of Kanagawa is undoubtedly the best-known work of the artist. It was the first published print of his famous series “thirty-six views of Mount Fuji”. 46 prints produced between 1830 and 1833. His fame spread beyond the borders of Japan and was one of the sources of inspiration of the Impressionist movement in Europe.
